How An Okrika Seller Is Bending Down To Select His Future

When you see an okrika (thrift cloth) seller hustling in markets like Yaba or Kontangora, it’s easy to focus on only the piles of clothes or the chemical smell of the freshly shipped bales. But behind the scenes, some of these sellers are flipping those second hand pieces into fortunes. Saturday, for example, is an okrika seller who has turned his thrift hustle into a money-making machine and found a way to save every kobo he earns. His secret? Continue reading 👇🏽

How has your Saturday been, Saturday? (laughs) You get that a lot, don’t you?

Saturday: (pretends to frown slightly, then bursts into laughter) All the time oo. Wetin man go do?

I was worried that you would get offended

Saturday: At all o. Life is not that hard (laughs

(Phone rings in the background)

Saturday: Please, can I pick this call? I’m expecting some new bales and my boy is calling me with good news (excitedly

Oh sure sure. Feel free to.

(Saturday walks out and walks back in a few moments later, smiling)

Saturday: Sorry ehn, this bale, na all the trendy trendy styles dey there.  This Christmas, na my customers get am  ( pauses) You wear okrika, right?  I fit give you some fine fine dresses at discount price o?

No o. I’m not a fan of thrift wears.

Saturday: Thrift?! We never hear word since una give am that fine name. Thrift, preloved, vintage, everything, na me dey sell am. ( dramatizes) See ehn, I have exactly this top you’re wearing. Let me show you.

Errr, this is custom made o (laughs)

Saturday: See this my sister o! Custom made dey okrika too o. Infact, let me show you…

Saturday, can we do this after the interview, please?

Saturday: (laughs) Sorry sorry. E just Dey pain me say you no wan believe me

I believe you ooo. Very much sef. But tell us, how did you start this business?

Saturday: My uncle taught me o. How to order bales, how to select the ones that customers will rush and how to avoid what you ordered versus what you got. Everything I know, he taught me. It was hard at first oo because this business, everybody is now doing it. But we thank God so far.

Who would you say are your biggest customers?

Saturday: You won’t believe it, but you see celebrities and boutiques ehn, dem dey rush us. Boutiques would buy okrika in bulk, rebrand and sell them as ‘new.’ All these celebrities too that love unique pieces for their films come to us. Whenever I tell my customers that “na here Mimi Thompson and Nonso Chike dey buy clothes” It’s not a joke oo (laughs even more)

That’s incredible! You’re really a successful business man

Saturday: Don’t let me blow my trumpet sha but selling okrika has changed how I handle money. When you see boutiques reselling something you sold for ₦1,500 at ₦20,000, you start to understand the idea of investing money instead of wasting it. That’s actually what led me to crypto. I saw it as another way to turn my okrika money to thrift, like you people used to call it.

Interesting perspective! How did you discover Quidax?

Saturday: One of my boys oo. That boy too sharp. In fact, he was the one I was calling the other time. He introduced me to Quidax and I just liked how everything was so simple. It’s just like how I manage my okrika business, simple and straightforward.

On Quidax, everything is straightforward and I can see how the market is doing so I know when to invest in new coins or just swap and make my money back. It’s the same sense for how I order new bales of okrika and when I sell out. For someone like me with only ND degree from Poly, it was perfect. No plenty big big  English.

Nice nice. Every new thing you share is more impressive than the last. But one important question, what do you do with your crypto profits?

Saturday: I no dey touch am o. Never! It doesn’t even enter my eyes. Once I invest and the price goes up, I swap and withdraw my  profits, then I save it. I’m saving for something big: my house in the village.

I’ve already laid the foundation. My plan is to finish it next year, and once that’s done, I’ll finally start traveling home for Christmas. I want to host my family, give them a comfortable place to stay. It’s a big dream, but I know I’ll get there with the way I’m investing and saving my profits. Like now, once BTC enter $100k, I go too happy. I’ll withdraw straight and wait for the best time to buy the dip again.

That’s so inspiring, Saturday. What advice would you give to someone who’s just starting out in thrift business or thinking about saving with crypto?

Saturday: Hmm I will say “focus on the future.” Whether it’s okrika or crypto, have your game plan. If you want to hold, hold am tight. And if you want to sell sharp sharp, that one sef dey.  Always hink of how what you’re doing today can set you up for tomorrow. And if you’re starting with crypto, Quidax is the plug o. Very reliable and perfect for beginners.

Thank you for sharing your story, Saturday. It’s clear you’ve got big plans, and we can’t wait to see them come to life!

Saturday: Thank you! And to everyone reading this, just know, small okrika can lead to big boutique o. Stay consistent!

Saturday’s story weaves together the importance of a disciplined approach to money, and how crypto fits into those long-term plans for anyone with big dreams.
