The Salary We Collected in December, Is it The Same Salary We Are to Spend Throughout January?

Remember Jide, the self-proclaimed King of Detty December we interviewed in Episode 10, well he’s back to share how his Detty December went.

This young man lived his best life last Christmas hopping from one party to another, eating jollof rice, collecting takeaway packs, and storing up food like an apocalypse was coming. But now, reality has hit and his bank account is looking like it’s still recovering from last week’s flex.

In this hilarious and too-relatable interview, he talks about how he became the guy with the fullest fridge but emptiest wallet, his post-Detty December regrets, and why he’s currently side-eyeing his December income and wondering if it’s the same one he’s supposed to use for the whole of January.

Word on the street is that you enjoyed December more than anyone else. True or false?

Jide: 100% true mehn. I was everywhere, bro. Weddings, house parties, end-of-year events, concerts, you name it, I was there. I didn’t just attend parties, I collected food like it was currency. My fridge was so full, it felt like I was preparing for World War III. I had so much fun mehn.

Had? Why past tense? Detty December hasn’t ended yet na

Jide: Lol, you want to tease me abi? My own Detty December has ended o. Even my account is looking at me like, “Oga, what happened to us?” I’m honestly wondering if it’s the same December salary I’m supposed to spend in January. The math isn’t mathing.

So, how did you let it get this bad?

Jide: Let’s be honest, Detty December is a trap. You tell yourself you’ll budget, but then the invites start rolling in. First, it’s a wedding, then a birthday, then a concert, and before you know it, you’ve danced your savings away.

Plus, my people don’t even let you leave parties empty-handed, I was moving around with coolers, collecting small chops, rice, chicken, you name it. And when they are giving you takeaway like that, you’ll want to drop something too na. 10k here, 50k there.

Let’s not even talk about the cost of fuel for driving from one location to another.  I wasn’t buying food so in my head, it felt like I was saving money, but na lieee.

What’s the wildest experience you’ve had so far this December?

Jide: Hmm, I think it was this one day I had six weddings back to back. Almost like everyone in Lagos decided to set their weddings that same day. As we were moving from one location, we were entering another.

And one sure thing is, once you can give the waiters small change, they will settle your table well. They were literally begging  us to take food home. I didn’t argue, I packed five takeaway packs and extra drinks. In fact, my fridge refused to close.

But guess what? Now that the food is gone, it’s looking like I can’t even be able to afford Indomie this January o.

You must have had a blast, though. Any regrets?

Jide: Regrets ke? Nah. I’m not even ashamed, I lived my best life. But next time sha, I’ll be smarter. I’ll still party, but I’ll save. All the fun I was having made me forget that January alone has 100 days lol, but my eyes are clear now. The kind of Detty December 2.0 I’m planning for next year will be wiser 🥹

So, you’re already thinking about the next Detty December?

Jide: Before nko? I can never run from enjoyment o, I’ll just prepare better. What doesn’t kill me makes me stronger. In 2025, I’ll let my money work for me so that by December, I won’t just be the King of enjoyment, I’ll be the King of savings too.

Any tips for people like you looking to survive January after a Detty December?

Jide: Plenty tips oo.

  1. Stock up smart. If you’re collecting food at parties, make sure you freeze it well, don’t be like me oo.
  2. Know your limits. Don’t let Detty December trick you into believing you’re a billionaire when you’re not. Pace yourself, you can party without going broke.
  3. Prepare for January while you party. December enjoyment shouldn’t mean January suffering.
  4. Never touch your crypto savings. I know I’m going to suffer a little this January but one thing I’m thankful for is that I wasn’t tempted to touch my crypto savings.

Final thoughts as we head into January?

Jide:  Enjoyment is good, but balance is better. This December taught me that you can have fun and flex, but you need to also plan for tomorrow. In 2025, I’m leveling up, Detty December will see vibes, but January will see sense first.
