When you’re fine, the world assumes life is easy. “Ah, she’s just sitting pretty, money must be flowing in from love interests!” But for someone like Amarachi, that couldn’t be further from the truth. For her, being a “fine girl” has meant hustling twice as hard because everyone assumes every good looking woman has her beauty as her only currency.
In this episode, we met Amarachi, an effortlessly stunning 26-year-old who turned heads as soon as she walked into the room.
“Don’t be deceived o,” she said with a laugh. “Being fine doesn’t pay the bills; in fact, it sometimes makes things worse.” Intrigued, we settled in to hear her story.
What’s your name and what do you do?
Amarachi: My name is Amarachi, but people just call me Amara or Ammie baby. I work in marketing for a fashion brand by day, and I also sell wigs and makeup products online. Then I take catering and cooking gigs once in a while for friends and family. If anyone also needs a personal closet shopper at Eko market or Yaba, I’m the girl for the job. Multiple sources of income are necessary to survive this economy. ( chuckles)
Ah ahn, fine girl like you? What about those pretty girl favours? 😉
Amarachi: (laughs and looks around dramatically) Income where? Oh please, if only! I’m not surprised that you’d also think that though. People assume money just rains on me because I’m fine. It’s the opposite! I actually have to work twice as hard to prove I’m more than just a pretty face. You’d be shocked by the number of times someone has said, “Oh, you must have a rich boyfriend,” when they see me doing things for myself. Meanwhile, I’m out here grinding non-stop!
Oh wow! That must be frustrating for you
Amarachi: Ha you have no idea! The worst is when people think I don’t have brains. And it upsets me that in this big 2024, there’s still the belief that pretty girls can’t be hardworking or smart. Like, because you fine, you no fit get sense! At work, I have to prove myself constantly. It’s like, if I make a good business decision, they’ll insinuate that it’s luck or someone helped me. No one believes I can think for myself. It’s exhausting!
How do you balance everything with such pressure?
Amarachi: I no go lie, it’s tough. I do my 9-to-5, then I have all these businesses too as well as other gigs I have to take on the side. And when I’m not doing that, I’m thinking of the next hustle. I’m not sure I even balance anything. People see me and assume this slim figure is me staying fit or being intentional. Lies! It’s too much work and no rest.
WOW sounds like a lot.
Amarachi: It is. The misconceptions are so annoying and that’s why I don’t waste time clearing people who want to stereotype me. The thing is, being a fine girl doesn’t pay the bills in Lagos. Or anywhere else. There’s no free lunch anywhere, unless you want to live off sugar daddies, which is not my portion abeg! (Rolls eyes)
So, how do you manage your finances?
Amarachi: Ah, managing money as a young woman in Lagos is no joke o. And to do fine girl is expensive. I try to save here and there, but the cost of living keeps going up. I mean, we all know what the economy is saying. I’ve tried investing, but nothing seems to stick. Before salary even lands, bills have sucked up. And don’t get me started on the side-eyes I get when I say I’m trying to secure my financial future, like say I no fit get plan! Everytime, it’s someone telling me to go and find one rich man to marry. Like I want to surrender my future to a man’s benevolence? Taarh!
Have you ever considered trading crypto or any other investments?
Amarachi: (laughs) Crypto ke? I don’t want to get scammed ooo. Small money that I’m still managing, I should now lose it? It’s too early to go back to my village, please
Interesting! Where did you get this scam impression from?
Amarachi: Well, let me not lie. It’s what I’ve heard. Making money today and losing it all tomorrow. And those crypto boys are always crying on the TL so that’s a red flag for me.
So you didn’t know you could handle your own crypto investments by yourself?
Amarachi: Hmm, really ? How come nobody told me this sooner? (laughs) I always thought crypto was just for rugged guys. And everything about it seemed like one shady business that I didn’t have the energy to just get involved in. Let me just face my wig business o (laughs)
